Anil Kumble is an ex-Indian cricketer who played ODI and test format for India from 1990 to 2008. The Karnataka-born leg spinner found a unique way of dealing with the batsmen, rather than turning the ball he relied on pace, bounce, and accuracy. He made his international debut for India in 1990 against Sri Lanka and took one wicket. In the same year, ‘Jumbo’ played his first test match against England in Manchester and claimed three wickets on debut.
Kumble was the leading wicket-taker in the 1996 World Cup with 15 scalps in 7 matches, helping India to reach the semis which they subsequently lost to Sri Lanka. His other remarkable performance came in Pakistan’s tour of India in 1999 in Delhi when he took all ten wickets for 74 runs and became the 2nd bowler to do so after Jim Laker. In 2006, The Karnataka spinner became the first Indian to take 500 wickets in tests and Steven Harmison was his 500th victim. Kumble added another feather to his cap when he completed 600 test wickets in 2008 against Australia in Perth and Symonds was his prey this time.
Anil Kumble grabbed 619 wickets in 132 tests for India with 35 five-wicket hauls. However, he accounted for the most test wickets against Australia, taking 111 wickets in 20 matches. In ODIs, the leggie got 337 wickets in 276 games with Pakistan being his favorite opponent. getting 54 wickets in 34 matches against them.
The ace bowler retired from the ODIs after the 2007 World Cup while in tests he hanged his boots in 2008 after playing his last game against Australia in Delhi. In both formats, Kumble is the highest wicket-taker for India to date.
