Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of Team India on Wednesday 9th July. He succeeded Rahul Dravid whose tenure ended after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024. BCCI secretary Jay Shah made the announcement via his X account.

The former left-hand batsman will join the team in the upcoming limited-over series against Sri Lanka. Gambhir is taking over a high-spirited Indian team post-T20 World Cup triumph so his job will be to coordinate with the players and coaching staffs to build a good rapport in the team and explore the areas of improvement to ensure the team can win the upcoming five ICC events in his timespan.

Gambhir does not have experience in full-time coaching but recently, Kolkata Knight Riders lifted their 3rd IPL title under his mentorship. Besides, before this role he served Lucknow Supergiants for two consecutive years as a mentor and they qualified in the playoffs in both editions.

The Southpaw from Delhi was a fine opener serving India for almost a decade. His ability to handle pressure helped India to win two World Cup finals, 97 in the 2011 World Cup final and 75 in the 2007 T20 World Cup final. He also led KKR to win two trophies in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

It is believed that his aggressive approach towards the game would steer India to dominate across formats in world cricket. Gambhir himself remained a great batsman so his insights and experience on the field would strengthen India abundantly.
