Ishant Sharma is one of the few long-serving fast bowlers in India whose career has lasted more than 13 years like Zaheer Khan and Kapil Dev. After making big at the early stage of his Ranji Trophy career with 46 wickets in 9 matches in 2006-07, Ishant Sharma was selected for the Indian team for the 2007 Bangaldesh tour as a replacement for Munaf Patel. He made his test debut in the second test and bowled three overs without getting any wickets. Sharma picked up his first five-wicket haul in the next test series against Pakistan in Bengaluru.

Ishant came into the limelight in 2008 when he delivered a hostile spell to Aussie captain Ricky Ponting at Perth and got him out at the slip cordon after beating his edge many times. Post that spell, he became a regular member of the Indian test setup however, there was a tussle for places in the playing xi due to bowlers like Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Sreesanth, etc.

During the latest stage of Zaheer’s test career after the 2011 World Cup, Ishant became the first-choice bowler for India in tests and his smooth run continued till 2021. Then he was dropped from the test team amid the emergence of fast bowlers like MD Siraj and Shardul Thakur and a dip in form. The Delhite fast bowler has featured in 105 tests and claimed 311 wickets at a decent strike rate of 61.61 with 11 five-wicket hauls to his name.  He is also the 4th Indian bowler and 2nd Indian seamer to play 100 games in the tests after legendary Kapil Dev. His 311 wickets is 5th most wickets for India in the longest format.

Sharma was also a part of India’s famous Lord’s victory in 2014. He was the Man of the Match for claiming 7/74 in the 2nd innings, aiding India to bowl the visitors out for 223 and win the game by 95 runs. It is one of the best spells bowled by an Indian in test cricket history. Then, Ishant again helped India to register a memorable test victory at the same venue after seven years in 2021. This time he took 5 wickets in the game

He loves to play against England as he has the most test wickets against them with 67 wickets in 23 outings but his most fifers came against New Zealand (3).
