KeymasterThe ODI World Cup is a tournament where every bowler wants to give his best and make their country proud. Five five-wicket haul is a remarkable feat for a bowler. Earlier it was easy to take wickets in piles due to the assistance in wickets for the bowlers but in the modern era, a bowler does not regularly get a fifer. It takes accuracy, variations, and a bit of wit to get wickets nowadays. The golden period of the WC has witnessed greats like Glenn Mcgrath, Wasim Akram, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Lasith Malinga come and give lovely performances for their respective teams. Let us take you through the bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls in the World Cup.
Indian star Mohammed Shami surpassed Mitchell Starc to become the bowler with the most five-wicket hauls in the World Cup during its 13th edition. His first fifer came in the 2015 edition against England and in the 2023 World Cup, he has been on fire, taking 23 wickets in just 6 games, including 3 fifers to take his tally to 4. The UP Boy ripped through the Kiwi batting lineup in the important semi-finals, returning with the figures of 7/57 to take India to the finals.
One of the significant bowlers of Australia, Mitchell Starc has 3 five-wicket hauls in his name in the World Cup, the 2nd most by any bowler. The fiery left-arm pacer steams in and swings the ball both ways with the new ball and uses pinpoint yorkers and bouncers with the old ball to keep the batters under control. Having played 27 games, he has bagged 3 fifers with 62 scalps.
Aussie legend Glenn McGrath is known for his bowling prowess in the World Cup. From 1996 to 2007, he spearheaded the Australian bowling attack in 4 editions and ended his career as the highest wicket-taker with 71 wickets in 39 outings. The bowler who makes the batsmen dance to his tune with any ball touched the five-wicket mark twice which makes a place for him on the list of most five-wicket hauls in the World Cup too. He was one of the major contributors in Australia’s victory in the 2003 and 2007 World Cup.
The other bowlers on the chart of the most five-wicket hauls are
