Most Goals In Euro Cup History
The UEFA Euro Cup is the second most watched and desired international football tournament after the Fifa World Cup. Having begun in 1960, the prestigious event has completed 16 seasons and the 17th one is all set to get underway in 2024 in Germany. The first edition was hosted by France and the contemporary Soviet Union won the tournament by beating Yugoslavia by 2-1. Italy lifted the trophy in the last installment in 2021. Germany and Spain have won three titles apiece, France and Italy have clinched two trophies, while the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands have lifted it once.
This event’s rich history involves the top players in Europe like Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, etc. Euro occurs once in four years. One of the greatest footballers of all time, Portuguese legend Christiano Ronaldo has scored the most goals in Euro Cup history. Christiano has played five editions from 2004 to 2021 and got 14 goals in 25 matches. In the last edition of the marquee event, he scored five goals which was the highest of that edition. The stalwart was a part of the 2016 Euro-winning Portugal team.
As an attacking midfielder, Michel Platini gets 2nd place on the elite list of most goals in the Euro Cup with 9 goals in only five matches. He represented France in the 1984 edition and netted all of that in that season only, his 9 goals are the most by a player in a single edition. On the back of his superb performance, France lifted their maiden Euro trophy.
Former English striker, Alan Shearer participated in three seasons of Euro- 1992, 1996 & 2000 and notched up 7 goals in 9 matches which is the 3rd most. His best outing in the event was in 1996 when he made five goals and won the honorable Golden Boot.
