Indian legendary batsman Virat Kohli won the honorable ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year Award 2023 for his stellar performance in the format last year. It was Virat’s 4th award in this category, having won it in 2012, 2017, and 2018. He also became the first player to win the IMOCY award four times. He surpassed the tally of his former RCB teammate AB DE Villers who won the award previously thrice.
The other nominees for this prestigious award were his compatriots Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami, and Kiwi all-rounder Daryl Mitchell. The Delhi boy bagged the award following his astonishing display in the home 2023 World Cup where he amassed 765 runs in 11 games at a staggering average of 95.62 and a dashing strike rate of 90.31, the highest by any batter in a World Cup season. His mammoth tally contained 6 fifties and 3 centuries, including a sensational 117 against New Zealand in the semi-finals, helping him to break Sachin’s record of 49 centuries.
Overall, The modern-day great batter scored 1377 runs in 27 ODIs in 2023, averaging an impressive 72.46 and laced with 6 tons and 8 half-centuries. However, Shubman Gill made more runs in the format than him with 1584 runs in 29 matches. Virat’s rich contribution in the last World Cup for India surely rewarded him with the accolade.
