KeymasterWhich emerging star will shine the most in this World Cup?
Among the emerging stars, the big names are Shubman Gill, Harry Brook, Shaheen Afridi, Marco Jansen, Cameron Green, Rachin Ravindra, Noor Ahmed, Dunith Wellalage, Shoriful Islam, etc. All the mentioned players are great talents and doing well for their country. However, the top three contenders for the top performers list will be Shubman Gill, Shaheen Afridi, and Dunith Wellalage.
Gill is already the top scorer in ODIs this year, amassing more than 1,200 runs with 5 tons and as many fifties. He is a gun batter in Indian conditions especially. Additionally, prior to the WC, he scored the most runs in the Asia Cup and Australia series too. So there are high chances of him outperforming in this cricket World Cup.
in terms of fast bowling in the last 2 years, Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi has impressed everyone with his swings with the new ball and bowling slower and bouncer with the old ball. In almost every game, he strikes with his deadly swing-bowling opening spell and equally creates pressure on the batters in the middle and death overs, delivering on the good length with variety. Currently, he is the highest wicket-taker in 2023 in ODIs for Pakistan with 24 scalps in 12 games. Hence, it is obvious that he will bother in abundance in this year’s mega event.
Sri Lanka’s Dunith Wellalge does not carry a lot of experience but his skill with the ball is exquisite. Within just a few OD games, he has already got the wickets of big players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Babar Azam, etc. His no-change of action while bowling off-spin and straighter makes him tough for the batsmen. In the recently concluded Asia Cup, he ended up with 10 wickets in 6 matches, the 2nd most in the event. He is a decent contributor with the bat too. His unbeaten inning of 46 against India in the Super 4 game of the Asia Cup 2023 is a testament to his temperament and power-hitting. So he will definitely be a key player for Lanka in the World Cup.
