KeymasterShubman Gill Hit Two Centuries In First Two Tests As Captain
Shubman Gill, the torchbearer of the new-generation Indian team, etched his name into the history books by becoming only the fourth Indian captain to score centuries in each of his first two Tests as skipper. During the first innings of the second Test against England at Birmingham on July 2, the 25-year-old produced a masterclass in discipline and flair, crafting a sublime 114* off 216 balls. His composed knock was pivotal in pushing India past the 300-run mark.
Gill now finds himself in the esteemed company of Indian greats—Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Hazare, and Virat Kohli—who achieved the same feat in their initial matches as captains. Kohli was the last to do so, accomplishing it during the 2014 Australia tour.
In the opening Test at Leeds, Gill had already announced his arrival as captain with a commanding 147 off 227 deliveries, blending elegance with endurance. Remarkably, in just five Test appearances on English soil, Gill has equaled Kohli’s tally of centuries in England, signaling his comfort and growing dominance in challenging overseas conditions.
