South African all-rounder and stand-in skipper Wiaan Mulder delivered a once-in-a-generation performance in the 2nd Test against Zimbabwe on Monday, July 7th, at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. Batting at No. 3, Mulder scored an unbeaten 367 off 334 balls, featuring 49 fours and 4 sixes, leading South Africa to a mammoth 625/5 declared in 114 overs.
Mulder’s innings shattered multiple records:
Highest individual Test score by a South African, surpassing Hashim Amla’s 311 in 2012*
Second-fastest triple century in Test history, reaching 300 in just 297 balls, behind Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball 300
Fastest double century by a Proteas batter, achieved in 214 balls
Second South African to score a Test triple century, after Amla
His knock included two massive partnerships:
184 runs with David Bedingham for the 3rd wicket
217 runs with Dwaine Pretorius for the 4th wicket
Mulder also contributed with the ball, claiming 3 wickets, and helped South Africa seal a dominant innings and 236-run victory, clinching the Test series 2-0.
At just 27 years old, Mulder’s innings is now the fifth-highest individual score in Test history, and the highest ever in an away Test match, surpassing Hanif Mohammad’s 337.
