Most Runs In Powerplay In IPL
Powerplay is a booster for the batting team in this world of T20 cricket. The powerplay allows the batting team to hit the opponent bowlers mercilessly as only two fielders are permitted outside the circle in the first six overs for the bowling team. Amid the use of flat surfaces in T20 cricket, batsmen easily target the bowlers due to the lack of swing seam. Hence, the more runs a team makes in the powerplay the chances of them reaching a huge total increase. IPL has always been a tournament of big scores, let’s have a look at the teams with the most runs in powerplay in the IPL.
Sunrisers Hyderabad now has the most runs in powerplay in the IPL. They made 125/0 in the first six overs against Delhi Capitals during a match in the IPL 2024 in Delhi, breaking KKR’s record of 105 runs which they made in IPL 2017. It was openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head who wreaked havoc on DC bowlers, scoring 40 off 10 balls and 84 in 26 balls respectively. They scored 20+ runs on average against each bowler. The Aussie southpaw brought up his fifty in a mere 16 balls in the game, the joint-fourth-fastest in the IPL.
Kolkata Knight Riders scored 105/0 in 6 overs in the IPL 2017 against RCB at the Chinnaswamy Stadium it was the highest score in powerplay in IPL till 2024 before SRH shattered it. The opening duo of Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine destroyed the RCB bowling unit, chasing a modest target of 159 runs. The Caribbean fresh opener scored 54 off 17 balls while reaching his fifty in just 15 balls and Lynn made 50 off 22 balls.
Chennai Super Kings gets 3rd place on the elite list of most runs in powerplay in IPL, having scored 100/2 in six overs during the second qualifier against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2014 at the Wankhede Stadium. It was the standalone carnage by Suresh Raina who scored 87 off only 25 balls with the help of 12 fours and 6 sixes to give CSK a rapid start against a target of 227 runs. His heroics went in vain as CSK lost the game by 24 runs.
