KeymasterShikhar Dhawan Retired From International Cricket
Ace Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan retired from international and all forms of cricket with an immediate effect. He shared the sad news of his retirement through an emotional video on social media on Saturday stating- “As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for the love and support! Jai Hind!”.
The Southpaw last played for India during the 2022 ODI series against Bangladesh and scored only 18 runs in three matches in the series. Afterward, he lost his place to emerging batters like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc. Having made his debut against Australia, he scored 6793 runs in 167 ODIs at a captivating average of 44.11 with the help of 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries.
His last appearance in the T20I came against Sri Lanka in 2021. The Delhi boy featured in this format on and off, amassing 1759 runs in 68 outings at 126.36. Dhawan featured in tests for the last time in 2018 and his inability to play swing bowling restricted him to 34 tests where he accumulated 2315 runs at 40.61.
His remarkable achievement for Indian cricket was winning the Champions Trophy 2013 in England and he ended up as the highest run-getter with 363 runs in five matches, bagging the Golden Bat award. He also clinched the Golden Bat in the 2017 edition of the tournament but India lost the finals to Pakistan. Shikhar was in tremendous form in the 2019 World Cup, amassing 125 runs in 2 games, including a match-winning 117 against Australia. But a fatal injury led him to stay in the dugout for the rest of the event.
Shikhar Dhawan performed exceptionally well in the IPL, he is ending his career with 6769 runs in 221 innings under his belt. He is only behind Virat Kohli on the elite list of most runs in the cash-rich league.
Dhawan’s spectacular partnership with Rohit Sharma in the ODIs from 2013-2019 was the center of attraction in the cricketing world and it aided India to win many games especially, in the ICC events and Asia Cups.
