Swapnil Kusale won the third medal for India in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, clinching Bronze in the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 positions event with a penultimate score of 451.4 on Thursday. This was India’s third shooting medal in the event which is the most in a sport in an Olympics edition by our nation.
The journey to the 3rd place was not easy for the Kolkhapur boy. He was constantly reshuffling to sixth, fifth, and fourth positions due to high competition and skillful athleticism in the eighth shooter final round before cementing third place after the standing round with impeccable shots. At the end of Kneeling and prone rounds, he was in 5th spot with 310.1 points.
The 29-year-old with the profession of ticket collector in the Indian railways has been competing in international events since 2012 and it took him 12 years to make his Olympics debut. In the very first attempt, he made 1.4 billion Indians, including his family proud.
In order to qualify for the final round, Swapnil came 7th during the initial round among 44 shooters with a score of 198 in the kneeling position, 197 in the prone position, and 195 in the standing position. His compatriot Tomar accumulated 589 points, one point less than him.
