KeymasterWhat are the Retention Rules For IPL 2025 Mega Auction?
The IPL mega auction will mark its return after three years for the 2025 season in November or December. The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League 2025 will take place in its regular window of April-May. All eyes and ears will be on this year’s mega auction as BCCI is all set to make some significant changes in the rules for the auction. The major focus will be on the retention of the players. Some reports suggest that the Apex Committee of IPL would allow only five players for retention for each team and the right-to-match card would be removed.
Earlier during a meeting in Mumbai between the team owners and BCCI, most of the franchises requested the board members to let them retain 5-6 players so that they can keep their main players. The teams invest immensely in their players to do well in the tournament each year, hence they don’t want the mega auction to happen every three years. In the past, the mega action would happen every four years.
However, the BCCI has kept everyone guessing about how many players among the five retains would be Indian and how many would be foreign nationals. In the 2022 mega auction, the board allowed the teams to retain four players with not more than two overseas players.
On the other hand, if BCCI reinstates the uncapped player rule which considers an international player who has retired for six years as an uncapped player, MS Dhoni may be seen for Chennai Super Kings in the next season again.
