Morne Morkel Joined As India’s Bowling Coach

Former South African ace fast bowler Morne Morkel joined the Indian team as their bowling coach and his tenure will begin from 1st September. The BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed the news of his appointment on Wednesday.

Morne Morkel Joined As India's Bowling Coach

Morkel will join the Men in Blue during the 1st test of the Bangaldesh tour of India, starting on 19th September in Chennai. He could not make it to Sri Lanka for his duties due to personal issues hence Sairaj Bahutule was with the team for six matches in the same role.

The 39-year-old will be involved with the Indian coaching staff led by head coach Gautam Gambhir with whom he has already worked for two years for Lucknow Supergiants in the IPL. It is believed that Gambhir recommended his name to the board for this bowling coach role.

Morkel seems to have a good bond with Gautam Gambhir as they were together in the coaching capacity in the LSG in IPL and apart from that, Gambhir captained him in the KKR from 2014 to 2016.

As a bowling coach, Morkel has three years of experience in IPL and he also worked with the Pakistan team during the 2023 World Cup in India. Later the Proteas start resigned from his position much before the expiry of his contract.

Gambhir’s coaching team already has KKR associates Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate. However, T Dilip has renewed his contract as the fielding coach who started his stint with Rahul Dravid as boss in 2021.
