The T20 World Cup is the only ICC tournament in the format and T20 being the most popular format, everybody wants to lift it. The marquee event started its journey in 2007 in South Africa and so far eight editions of the competition have been played. Though the T20 World Cup began in the early 2000s still veterans like Ricky Ponting, Shoaib Akhtar, Brett Lee, Daniel Vettori, Graeme Smith, etc were part of it at some point. The 2024 T20 World Cup is around the corner and it will begin in June, hence the fans are eager to reminiscence the T20 World Cup winners list.

South Africa hosted the maiden T20 World Cup in 2007 and India lifted the trophy in their first appearance by beating Pakistan in the finals by 5 runs in Johannesburg. Batting first, India set a commendable target of 158 runs on the back of Gautam Gambhir’s 75 off 54 balls and Rohit Sharma’s 30 in 16 balls. In reply, Pakistan could only score 152 runs as the Indian bowling lineup led by Irfan Pathan (3) and RP Singh (3) kept them in check with the correct line and length. Irfan Pathan was conferred with the Man of the Match with his tremendous 3/16 in four overs.

The 2nd edition of the T20 World Cup was won by the first edition runners-up Pakistan. The Men in Green defeated Lanka by 8 wickets and eight balls to spare at Lord’s. Courtesy of Pakistan’s outrageous bowling led by Abdul Razzaq’s 3/20, they restricted Lanka to 138/6 in 20 overs. Later they chased down the score by toiling hard in 18.4 overs on the back of Afridi’s unbeaten 54 off 40 and Kamran’s 37. All-rounder Shahid Afridi earned the MOM award for his 1/20 and 54* in the game.

The inventor of cricket, England comes third on the elite list of T20 World Cup winners list. It was the first ICC trophy for the English side and they bagged it by defeating their arch-rival Australia by 7 wickets and 18 balls to spare. Getting the chance to bat first, Australia could only manage 147/6 due to vicious bowling by England. They leaked runs on a few occasions only. In pursuit of winning their first title, English opener Craig Kieswetter set the tone with a fluent 63 off 49 balls, and then Kevin Pietersen contributed with 47 off 31 balls. It was a historic moment for England and wicket-keeper Kieswetter won the MoM award while Kevin Pietersen bagged the Man of the Series award for his excellent run throughout the event.

The next two installments of the T20 World Cup were clinched by the West Indies in 2012 and 2016. They are the first team to win two titles.
