Gautam Gambhir is one of the best openers in the history of IPL and he often scores runs upon stepping on the field. The Southpaw began his career with Delhi Daredevils in 2008 and became the second-highest run-getter in that season with 534 runs in 14 matches. He stayed there for two more seasons till 2010. In 2009, the Left-hander had a very ordinary season, having 286 runs in 15 games. Then, the DC management promoted Gambhir as the captain in 2010 but it did not change the team’s fortune as they failed to qualify even for the play-off this time. The Skipper of the team Gambhir, remained silent once again with only 277 runs in 11 matches.

In 2011, Gambhir moved to Kolkata Knight Riders after being the most expensive pick in the auction. He led the side from 2011 to 2018 and changed the fortune of the franchise in 2012 as they clinched their first IPL title by beating CSK in the finals. The Delhite batsman top-scored for his team with 590 runs in 17 outings containing 6 fifties. In 2024, KKR lifted their second trophy under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. He made a decent 335 runs in 16 matches in the successful campaign of Kolkata.

After producing a similar performance as 2014, the 2011 World Cup winner had a memorable outing in 2016 and 2017 with 501 and 498 runs respectively. Gambhir returned to his former franchise Delhi in 2018 and, after failing miserably in 6 games which saw him amass a mere 85 runs with a fifty, he announced his retirement from professional cricket in the middle of the 2018 edition of the IPL.

Overall, Gautam Gambhir played 154 matches in IPL and scored 4217 runs with 36 fifties. He averaged 31.23 while his strike rate remained 123.88.
