KeymasterIndian Hockey Team Clinched Bronze Medal In Paris
The Indian Hockey Team clinched the coveted Bronze medal in the third-place match against Spain on Thursday in Paris in the ongoing Olympics 2024. They beat the Spanish side by 2-1 in a thrilling game. India not only secured the Bronze but won two consecutive medals for the first time in hockey in the global event since 1972. Four years ago in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, India beat Germany by 5-4 even after being at 1-3 at a point in the game and it seemed impossible to turn the table from the damage.
Fifty years down the line from today, India won two Bronze medals on a trot in the 1972 Olympics by defeating the Netherlands and before that, they overcame West Germany by 2-1 in the 1968 Olympics.
The Bronze medal match between India and Spain was a thrilling contest. Spanish skipper Miralles Marc opened the scoreline of the game in the second quarter after getting a penalty due to a foul made by Amit Rohidas. After getting the lead, the Spanish side dominated the game while the Men in Blue failed to create inroads.
However, in the last minutes of the second quarter, India started attacking and won a few penalties and free kicks. Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh leveled the score with one shot into the goal.
Afterward, within three minutes into the play in the third quarter, India won another penalty corner and captain Harmanpreet Singh made no mistake to give India a lead of 1 goal. India’s game regained control and their passes were on point after their lead. Spain tried their best to net an equalizer but could not recover from the havoc till the last minute.
It was India’s 4th medal in the Paris Olympics and surprisingly, all of them came in the form of Bronze.
