Jasprit Bumrah Became Third Indian To Pick Up 50 Test Wickets In A Calendar Year

Ace Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah became the third Indian seamer to pick up 50 test wickets on Friday, the first day of the second test of India’s tour of Australia 2024 in Adelaide. With this, he joined the elite list of legendary Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan, who had previously done so.

After India got bowled out for 180 on day 1 in front of hostile fast-bowling by the hosts led by Starc’s 6/48 with the pink ball, Australia got off to an impressive start and accumulated 86/1 in 33 overs at the end of day 1. Spearhead Jasprit Bumrah took the sole wicket as he pitched the ball on the good length and took it a bit away to find the edge of Usman Khawaja with Rohit Sharma making no mistake in the first slip. Khawaja became Bumrah’s 50th victim in tests this year and the 31-year-old on his birthday marked his excellence by being the first bowler to touch the 50 test wicket milestone in 2024.

India’s first World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev achieved the feat twice before in 1979 and 1983 with 74 and 75 wickets respectively while Zaheer Khan claimed 51 wickets in 15 matches in 2002. Bumrah has now 53 wickets in just 11 games in the ongoing year, stamping his authority as one of the best fast bowlers to ever play for India.
