KeymasterJay Shah To Become Next ICC Chairman
The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Secretary Jay Shah is all set to become the next ICC chairman, replacing current New Zealand office bearer Greg Barclay who joined in for the position four years back in 2020.
As per some reports, Barclay has informed the directors of the organization that he does not want to continue in the position as his tenure will end on November 30. If Jay Shah is willing to occupy the post, it will be learned on 27th August as the date is the last to file the nomination.
An ICC chairman gets three terms of two years to operate the set-up and now needs only 9 votes out of 16 to win the election. Earlier, the incumbent needed to have two-thirds of the majority to be elected.
Jay Shah took over as the BCCI secretary in 2019 and has completed five years with the board. His tenure will end in October 2025 and as per the BCCI constitution, an office bearer can serve for six years before going to the cooling period of three years. Collectively, an administrator stays for 18 years as an official (9 in-state association and 9 in BCCI) which means if he succeeds Barclay as the chairman he will have four more years left in the BCCI.
Shah has good bonds and relations with all sixteen voting members of the International Cricket Council. So if he gets appointed, he will be the youngest Chairman of the ICC at the age of 35.
Moreover, Jay Shah was the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association from 2013 to 2019 and was also associated with the finance and marketing committee of the BCCI since 2015.
