Team India became the first team to hit 100 sixes in a calendar year in tests in its 147 years of history during the 2nd innings of 1st test against New Zealand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday. They now have 100 sixes to their name with six tests remaining in 2024. Sarfaraz Khan hit the 100th maximum for the Men in Blue when he slogged one to the mid-wicket off Ajaz Patel.

The record previously belonged to England, who smashed a staggering 89 maximums in 2022. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have contributed the most sixes this year, with 29 and 16, respectively, while skipper Rohit Sharma, who is known for hitting effortless sixes, has slammed 11.

The hosts made a terrific comeback after getting a lead of 354 runs on Day 2 following their poor show with the bat which led them to bowl out for a paltry 46 runs. They ended the day 3 with 231/3 on board, trailing by 125 runs.

Skipper Rohit scored a smooth 52 while Virat Kohli scored 70 runs before getting out in the last ball of the day of Glenn Phillips. Sarfaraz Khan who forged 136 runs vital partnership for the third wicket with Kohli is unbeaten on 70 off only 79 balls. After Rohit’s dismissal, the duo of Kohli and Sarafaraz took the Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners to release the pressure and take India to a strong position in the game.
