What is The Virender Sehwag & Glenn Maxwell Controversy?

Ace Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has stirred controversy on social media after his shocking revelation about former Indian opener Virender Sehwag in his autobiography- “The Showman”. Maxwell and Sehwag were teammates in the 2014 season when Kings Xi Punjab, now known as Punjab Kings made it to the finals and lost it to Kolkata Kight Riders. Later in 2017, Sehwag became the Director of Cricket of Kings Xi Punjab, and the Aussie was leading the side in that season. Punjab did not have a great outing, winning only seven out of 14 games, leading them to the elimination.

In his book, Maxwell mentioned that after getting beaten awfully in their last group game against RPS, he was kicked out of the WhatsApp app group of Kings Xi Punjab without any notice and later got to know that DOC Sehwag leveled him as a “big disappointment” in the press conference which he was supposed to attend for the team. The incident hurt him badly and he did not expect such words from the Indian legend. He quoted in his book- “Upon getting onto the team bus, I found I’d been deleted from the main WhatsApp group. What was going on here? By the time we reached the hotel, my phone was blowing up, with Sehwag having unloaded on me as a “big disappointment”, blaming me for not taking responsibility as captain, and all the rest. Therefore, Maxwell messaged Sehwag saying that it was disheartening to see all those unpleasant comments about him in the press conference and he had lost a fan in him. The latter gave a cold response to it saying- “Don’t need a fan like you”. After this conversation, they never spoke.

He even stated that the head coach of the team at that time was J Arunkumar but Sehwag used to select the playing xi without consulting with the head coach and him. Sehwag even did not agree to a WhatsApp group for coaches where everyone would bring an idea to the table for the final decision.

In his stint with KXIP in 2017, Maxwell scored only 310 runs in 13 innings, and two years later, Punjab again picked him in the auction but his poor show with the bat made the franchise release him the next year.

This incident has started a storm in social media among fans, some fans are in favor of Sehwag while some are showing their sympathy for Maxwell and saying it was really unprofessional of Sehwag.
